Literally Speaking is Berlin's fiction reading series that features local writers and the authors who inspire their stories. Each month, five writers share their original work, as well as an excerpt from an author of their choice that highlights the month’s theme. Language that hits like a fist, cuts like a razor blade, or exhibits the gentle tenderness of a slow caress. We press our nose up to the glass for a good look at a society balancing on the brink of (self-)destruction. The ancient myth of Icarus warns against excess. Our global culture has long since cracked the walls of moderation and melted them like wax. Overpopulation and isolation walk side by side, not speaking to each other.[read more…]

Workshop mit Madhvi Ramani und Mary Kelly

Led by Madhvi Ramani, writer and editor (New York times, Penguin Random House), and Mary Kelly, playwright and actor (Nick Hern Books, Stinging-Fly Press).

This is not a traditional creative writing workshop. You will use theatre and original writing techniques to connect your physical voice with your voice on the page. You will move, you will write, you will explore and expand your individual voice. For women who want to start to write, continue to write, or want to surprise themselves.

Mary and Madhvi have twenty years combined creative coaching experience. Drawing from Madhvi’s background in creative facilitation (BBC) and Mary’s as an acting coach (The Opera Stage, Berlin and The Gaiety School of Acting, Dublin), they have developed a unique approach to creative writing for women.

Note: This workshop is only open to women, trans and non-binary people. Places are limited to 10. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

On 18th March 2019 German author Christa Wolf would have turned 90.

Lead by Birgit Dahlke (professor of Literary Studies at Humboldt University and head of the Christa and Gerhard Wolf Private Library Research Center), students of the Humboldt University discovered exciting motives in Christa Wolf's oeuvre that transcend time and space. Based on this work and together with graphic designer Martin Hoffmann they put up a surprising exhibition: Texts meet graphics, and Christa Wolf's poetic language takes on new forms.

    Workshop mit Roy MacLean

Stories can entrance, engage, even possess us. Every one of us has a story to tell; factual or fictional, cool documentary or heartfelt family journey, practical travelogue or sparkling flight of the imagination. But to become an accomplished storyteller one needs time, a conducive environment, and a sensitive guide to direct and refine individual talent.

Englischsprachige Diskussionsrunde mit Clementine Burnley, Dirk Laucke und Daniela Seel, Moderation: Iulia Dondorici

The spaces we use for the act of reading and writing are mostly private ones: in our own rooms, at our desks, at a table in a library, almost always in isolation from others, as if in a silent dialog with authors, poets and philosophers. However, is it not the case that these acts performed in solitude can lead to a political awakening? Have reading and writing not fed, given rise to, and sustained collective political changes, movements and risings?
