Mission Statement

Through its curated projects the Lettrétage has set innovative impulses for the capital of literature Berlin since 2006. Experimenting with new forms of production and presentation of literature lies right at the core. In particular, this includes the search for new, trans-disciplinary formats for literary events which go beyond conventional readings.

As the “anchor institution” of the independent literature scene in Berlin, the Lettrétage is committed to the solo self-employed literary professionals as well as to the various literary initiatives and independent project promoters in the city. Bilingual literary magazines, Independent-publishers, innovative writing-projects, translation initiatives, live readings and reading series offer an impressive breadth of active literary spaces and networks, of ideas and protagonists, who unfold the lively literary culture and contribute to the cultural appeal of Berlin. Maintaining the vitality and diversity of this scene in Berlin, picking up its impulses, providing it with a platform and, in addition, supporting it structurally through offers of free consultations, networking opportunities and further training are all at the centre of the Lettrétage programme.

Together with other colleagues, the Lettrétage established as an active founding member the Netzwerk freie Literaturszene Berlin e.V. (NFLB) – Network of the Independent Literature Scene Berlin, which focusses on the cultural and political interests of the independent literary scene in Berlin in relation to politics and public. As the coordinator of the Europe-wide literary network CROWD, Lettrétage implements projects in close cooperation with various international literary organizations, which serve as a means of connecting literary creators and mediators across languages and nations, as well as presenting international contemporary literature in an up-to-date format that brings it close to the audience.
