Berlin-based indie publisher etcetera press berlin presents its latest wonderful publications from Susan Madsen, Christiane Quandt and Katia Tangian.
In her volume “Zur Sache: Kunstakademie”, Katia Tangian confidently navigates the tension between essay, memoir and polemics and undertakes nothing less than a reckoning with the myth-shrouded art academy system of the Federal Republic of Germany between 1960 and 2010.
Tangian depicts a system that is characterized by self-presentation, abuse of power and structural irresponsibility: professors who use the academy as a stage for their vanity, randomly omit or tear apart students' work and confuse teaching with an authoritarian pose.
90 spiegelneurosen is after auf dem zauberberg ist kein platz mehr für alle Christiane Quandt's second volume of poetry at etcetera press Berlin.
Here, too, autobiographic/autofictional entries regularly published on social media are the starting point, which describe everyday situations in a poetically scarce form, sort emotional states and identities and stir them up again.
Quandt uses language without decorative strips, in constant metamorphosis, with biting humor and self-deprecating slapstick about vulnerability, neurodiversity and being chronically ill, always with a sense for the immediate gap in the text, in everyday life, in life.
In her prose debut, author and photographer Susan Madsen reconstructs her anti-authoritarian childhood in Denmark.
They are short, often very short stories, in which she laconically experiences the precarious living conditions of her childhood in an almost factual, often humorous tone of voice.
The stories are stripped down to their essence; just a few lines are enough to capture and illuminate a scene or a mood.

Katia Tangian
The author, photographer and art educator Katia Tangian, born 1975 in Moscow, has lived in Germany since 1991. After studying art history and literature in Bochum and freehand painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, she received her doctorate in art history. She worked as a university and museum lecturer and is currently working as a teacher at a grammar school near Hanover. Since 2000, she has published monographs and numerous publications in literary magazines and anthologies (including Freigeist, Wortschau, außer:dem). She published her doctoral thesis Spielweise Kunstakademie in 2010, Georg Olms Verlag. Tangian lives with her family in Garbsen near Hanover. In March 2026, etcetera press berlin will publish her book “Zur Sache: Kunstakademie”.
Christiane Quandt
Christiane Quandt is an author, editor and, above all, translator from Spanish and Portuguese. Her short prose has been published in various magazines and she uses Facebook as a platform for her poetic texts. Her translated authors include Andrea Abreu, Guadalupe Nettel, Roberto Bolaño, Ignacio Padilla, Adelaide Ivánova, Carlos Oquendode Amat, César Vallejo, Carmen Ollé, and others. She is a member of the editorial board of the magazine alba.lateinamerika lesen and was a judge of the Anna Seghers Prize in 2021. She most recently received the Bode Scholarship from the German Translation Fund in 2021, and she is currently working on translating the novels Carcoma by Layla Martínez and Lamala Costumbre by Alana Portero from Spanish. She lives with several dwarf hamsters and one person in the high-deck settlement in Berlin-Neukölln. On June 23, 2023, her poetry debut “auf dem zauberberg ist kein platz mehr für alle” was published by etcetera press berlin. Her 2nd volume “90 spiegelneurosen” followed in September 2025.
Susan Madsen
The late birth of the author and photographer Susan Madsen began at the age of 54 years. Since 2018, she has been studying fine art and sculpture at the Weissensee Academy of Fine Arts. There she discovered photography as her preferred medium for expressing herself artistically. Eine wahre Geschichte über unechte Kinder is her literary debut — an attempt to create in words those images that otherwise only appear in her photographs. She regularly presents her photographs to large followers on Facebook. Texts from her debut volume were published for the first time in CulturMag by Alf Mayer.
