Mission

As an anchor institution for Berlin's independent literary scene, Lettrétage offers literary workers from Berlin spaces for public events, workshops and work meetings and structurally strengthens them through free consulting, networking and continuing education services. Lettrétage is committed to solo self-employed people in the literary professions as well as the diverse literary initiatives and independent project sponsors in the city. Bilingual literary magazines, independent publishers, innovative author projects, translator initiatives, open mics and reading series offer an impressive range of literary spaces and networks, of ideas and participants who develop a lively literary culture and contribute significantly to Berlin's cultural appeal. Lettrétage's central task is to maintain the liveliness and diversity of this scene in Berlin, to absorb its impulses, to offer it a podium and also to structurally strengthen it.

With curated projects across Germany and Europe, such as the Creative Europe project CROWD, Lettrétage has been providing innovative impetus for the literary metropolis of Berlin since 2006. The focus is on testing new forms of production and presentation of literature. In particular, this includes the search for new, transdisciplinary or barrier-free formats of literary events beyond conventional “water glass readings.”

Lettrétage sees itself as a learning institution. Sustainability, awareness and the removal of barriers are at the center of our attention. Lettrétage was Germany's first literary house to develop its own sustainability concept. Since 2018, Lettrétage has also been regularly cooperating with literary actors from the deaf community and, in collaboration with them, carries out literary projects in German sign and spoken language.

As an active founding member, Lettrétage, together with colleagues, has set up the network Freie Literaturszene Berlin e.V. (NFLB), which bundles the cultural-political interests of Berlin's independent literary scene and represents them vis-à-vis politics and the public, and is involved in the Berlin Literature Conference (BLK).
