Translating Herta Müller: Berlin Book Launch for The Village on the Edge of the World
Join us for the Berlin launch of The Village on the Edge of the World (Granta, UK) by Herta Müller, translated into English by Kate McNaughton.
In this book-length interview, originally published under the title Mein Vaterland war ein Apfelkern (Hanser), the Nobel-prize winning author reflects on her early years in rural Romania, the brutality of Ceaușescu’s regime, and how writing and literature opened up a path to survival. Full of Müller’s characteristically dry wit and poetic eye for the absurdity of existence, this book is an ideal introduction for the uninitiated, and an essential companion for those already familiar with her work, and its publication is being accompanied by the rerelease of two of her novels: The Appointment and The Land of Green Plums.
A short reading from the book will be followed by a discussion between critic Alex Wells and translator Kate McNaughton.
