Fresh Eyes: Becoming Your Own Best Editor

Have you ever wanted a fresh pair of eyes on your writing? Or wanted those fresh eyes to be your own?
We pour everything into our work, focusing on the big picture and the tiny details simultaneously. This perspective can make it challenging to get the distance we need to edit ourselves. Editing is a skill every writer needs, whether you’re working on the first draft of a story, creating a new voice for a character, getting a manuscript ready to submit to an agent or revising a text for publication. Your editing skills come into play in a big way when assessing your own work and when offering criticism, which we’re often called upon to do for each other in a community of writers.
Something the art of translation has taught me is how to “see” the text in a nuanced way, even after numerous iterations and multiple drafts. Using techniques derived from my experience as a translator, writer and editor, we will do close readings of texts and in-class writing and editing exercises that will help us see our own writing. We will also explore how to receive and offer criticism, which we will put into practice by workshopping our own texts.
This two-day workshop will equip you with tools to get over text blindness, examine your style and language, develop your voice and offer meaningful commentary on other people’s work. This workshop is suitable for writers and translators of all levels. If you’re not currently working on a project, you’ll be given a short writing assignment before the workshop.

Saskia Vogel is from Los Angeles and lives in Berlin, where she works as a writer and Swedish-to-English literary translator. Permission (Dialogue Books/Coach House Books), her debut novel is forthcoming in March 2019. Saskia’s translations include books by some of Sweden’s most exciting contemporary voices, such as Lena Andersson, Johannes Anyuru, Karolina Ramqvist, and Lina Wolff. She has written on power and sexuality for publications such as Paris Review Daily, The White Review, Sight and Sound, and The Offing. Previously, she worked as a writing tutor at the University of Southern California’s Writing Center, Granta magazine’s global publicist, and as a magazine editor at the AVN Media Network, where she reported on adult entertainment.
