    ©Amy Newiss

Join us for the Berlin launch of “How I Lose You”, a novel by Kate McNaughton, which has just been published in the UK by Doubleday and in France by Les Escales. There will be a reading and Q&A (moderated by fellow author Jessica Miller) before the evening turns to drinks and music. When Eva and Adam fall into bed one Friday night, tired and happy after drinks with friends, they have their whole lives ahead of them. But their story ends on page twelve.

Reading with Barrett Watten and Daniel Tiffany

Barrett Watten plans to read “Plan B”, a poem written in the aftermath of our national catastrophe, as a kind of “knowledge base” for the symbolic rubble of the election and the state of political crisis it produced. The keyword 'Gleichschaltung', drawn from the German experience in March 1933, is used as a call not to “normalize” the result of the election—an imperative that continues for many. Both terms appear at regular intervals through the poem. Also evoked is the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald—a 1975 maritime disaster on the Great Lakes (and ballad by Gordon Lightfoot) that is iconic for residents of Michigan, for whom it represents the destruction of the state as well as the wreck itself. The poem is translated into German by Munich performance poet Franziska Ruprecht, and will be presented in multi-media format, along with other works.

It all starts with a question: What is it worth? To be? To be here? What follows is a vast project of leaving "On the roads" across Europe, and more ambitiously, to make the world poetic. A reconquest of the territories with a red suitcase, boxing gloves and the word as a weapon. The audience is invited to become a witness, even an accomplice.

Deutsch-englische Lesung: Premiere von "The Hour Between Dog and Wolf" mit Autorin Silke Scheuermann und Übersetzerin Lucy Jones.

    © Seagull Books

A young woman who has been living abroad returns to her hometown of Frankfurt am Main in Germany. Her sister Ines—a beautiful, impetuous painter—who still lives there, soon appears and promptly asks for financial help. But the returning sister knew this was coming—it is how their relationship has always worked. And this time, she’s determined that things will be different.
But our plans don’t always hold up to life’s surprises —and when the sister finds herself about to drift into an affair with Ines’s lover, the two women grow unexpectedly closer. "The Hour Between Dog and Wolf" is a tale of disorientation in a modern, rootless society that has become increasingly erratic and self-absorbed and powerful exploration of the difficulties of intimacy and addiction.

Language that hits like a fist, cuts like a razor blade, or exhibits the gentle tenderness of a slow caress. We press our nose up to the glass for a good look at a society balancing on the brink of (self-)destruction. The ancient myth of Icarus warns against excess. Mary and Madhvi have twenty years combined creative coaching experience. Drawing from Madhvi’s background in creative facilitation (BBC) and Mary’s as an acting coach (The Opera Stage, Berlin and The Gaiety School of Acting, Dublin), they have developed a unique approach to creative writing for women.

On 18th March 2019 German author Christa Wolf would have turned 90.

Lead by Birgit Dahlke (professor of Literary Studies at Humboldt University and head of the Christa and Gerhard Wolf Private Library Research Center), students of the Humboldt University discovered exciting motives in Christa Wolf's oeuvre that transcend time and space. Based on this work and together with graphic designer Martin Hoffmann they put up a surprising exhibition: Texts meet graphics, and Christa Wolf's poetic language takes on new forms.

Stories can entrance, engage, even possess us. Every one of us has a story to tell; factual or fictional, cool documentary or heartfelt family journey, practical travelogue or sparkling flight of the imagination. But to become an accomplished storyteller one needs time, a conducive environment, and a sensitive guide to direct and refine individual talent.

The spaces we use for the act of reading and writing are mostly private ones: in our own rooms, at our desks, at a table in a library, almost always in isolation from others, as if in a silent dialog with authors, poets and philosophers. However, is it not the case that these acts performed in solitude can lead to a political awakening? Have reading and writing not fed, given rise to, and sustained collective political changes, movements and risings?

Humble – self-aware, contrite, modest, poor, down-to-earth: Humble has many meanings but they all revolve around one central idea – it's the opposite of showy and ostentatious. Showy ostentation however might be the very core of today's culture – whether its influencers showing off their lifestyles, politicians showing off their nuclear arsenals, or industries paying extravagant bonuses while causing massive greenhouse emissions. Humble, it seems, is out of fashion.

“Who in all the world comes to Berlin voluntarily?” Joseph Roth’s question in THE WANDERING JEW (1927) asks us to consider the routes we take to end up in Berlin. His suggestion that there is something that drives people here is not only true of the refugee Jews from Eastern Europe then, but also characterizes the timeless situation of migrants and expats in Germany’s capital. Today Roth might be best known for his novels of the Habsburg Empire like RADETSKY MARCH (1932) and HOTEL SAVOY (1924). However, it was in Berlin where, chronicling the city’s diversity, with special attention to the marginalized, that he became a feuilletonist.

Jessie Kerspe explores how the visualization of nostalgic ideas and the interaction of text and images emerged in Chagall's work. Taking the three books illustrated by Chagall as a trilogy, one can represent the artist's triple identity as French, Jewish, and Russian. Paul Brody’s sound installation lands somewhere between a recorded concert and a poetry reading, what he calls “musical translations” of poems and short prose pieces. Underpinning the words are compositions based on samples from symphonies and instruments taped live in a studio, creating a series of playfully eclectic mini-musical-poetic adventures.

Whereas Uljana Wolf’s first poetry collection, KOCHANIE TODAY I BOUGHT BREAD (2005) was inspired by a Polish-German translation workshop and explored the silences and gaps in German-Polish history during time spent in Kraków and Silesia, ariel rosé’s last poetry collections (MORZE NOCĄ JEST MIĘŚNIEM SERCA, 2022 and PÓŁNOC. PRZYPOWIEŚCI, 2019) were written outside of Poland — in Norway, in Berlin, in constant movement. How does changing one’s home change the relation to one’s poetic language? How does the fact that both poets work as translators influence their thinking about what home is, or origins and originals are, or whose history is to be translated, and where language belongs – and according to whom?

Book Presentation: 'Arab Berlin: Dynamics of Transformation'
Arab Berlin – an Ibn Rushd Lecture with Nahed Samour and Mahmoud Salem

Sonnenallee is one of the most famous streets of Berlin these days - and this no longer related to the legendary 1990s film about the German reunification, but to all the Arab businesses framing its wide sidewalks. Arab groceries stores and halal butcher shops, shisha cafés and shawarma restaurants, Arab banks and Islamic fashion stores gave it it’s second name – for a while known as ‘Little Beirut’ or ‘Gaza Strip’, it now just goes by the name of ‘Arab Street’ to account for the diversity in Arab provenance. But these are just the facades, and there is so much more to Arab Life and Culture in Berlin.

The newly published book "Arab Berlin: Dynamics of Transformation" edited by Hanan Badr and Nahed Samour takes a closer look behind the facades and examines the multifaceted changes in Berlin and its Arab communities. From politics and society over history and migration to gender and beyond, Arabs actively participate in shaping these transformations. Badr and Samour’s comprehensive compilation comprises academic articles, essays, interviews, and photographs, providing profound insights into Berlin's intricate dynamics. Authors from diverse backgrounds contribute their perspectives, fostering a nuanced dialogue on contemporary shifts.

    ©Pablo Hassmann

On June 15, SIESTA celebrates its third and final Panoramas of Latin American Performative Literature in Berlin 2024, bringing together, for one last time, the emerging voices of three authors: Angélica Freitas opens the night with a vibrating and sharp performance on alopecia, sagging boobs, and menopause, pushing us to talk about how to survive the passage of time in a world made for men. Later, Franco Marcucci invites us to look through a deep cut into bacteria, fungi, & putrefaction, presenting living words that grow into network of breathing matter. Closing this last Panoramas, Cristian Forte brings us back to the stage with open ears, diving into the sound archives made of found footage-style-words-turned-into-poems.
