As the cold season progresses, many of us feel the urge to retreat to our cozy homes and shield ourselves from the increasing cold and darkness outside with a good book, a warm blanket, and a steaming cup of tea. However, getting together with other people, engaging in conversation, and forming a community is at least as effective a remedy for the autumn blues. In keeping with this, Lettrétage has a cozy month of events in store for us in November, featuring a diverse and multifaceted program of readings, improvisation, music, and discussion.
A special book premiere awaits us on Thursday, November 6, at 7:30 p.m. Lucy Jones has translated Ronald M. Schernikau‘s KLEINSTADTNOVELLE into English and will read from her translation. The work is now considered a classic of queer literature and is the author’s angry confrontation with his own youth in the narrow, rigid confines of small-town life. Afterwards, Lucy Jones and co-editor C. Bain will discuss the book.
A small anniversary will be celebrated on Friday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. The popular performance series CONVERGENCE will be making its tenth appearance at Lettrétage. Once again, you can immerse yourself in an experience where images, movements, and music flow into one another. This time, Milchtritt, iYi, and Det’ox + Nastya will be performing.
On Tuesday, November 19, at 7:00 p.m., feminist and economist Shadia Abdelmoneim and physician and activist Ibrahim Khattab will take an analytical and discursive look at the political crisis in Sudan. As part of the Ibn Rushd Lectures, the two will discuss, among other things, the Sudanese military institution, the ongoing armed conflict, and its catastrophic humanitarian impact on the civilian population. The event will be held in Arabic and moderated by Amany Alsiefy.
How does collaborative work function in literature? Authors Vijay Khurana, Madeleine Watts, and Gabriel Flynn are part of a seven-member “Writers Group” and will speak about their work processes and the importance of community on Friday, October 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Lettrétage. All three have recently published novels and closely accompanied each other’s creative processes.
At the end of the month, on Wednesday, November 26, at 7:30 p.m., another edition of the recurring lecture series “Kilmé talks” will take place at Lettrétage. The curatorial duo of Tyme Khleifi and Michael Barenboim has made it their mission to give visibility to Palestinian voices and invites various Palestinian artists, scientists, and intellectuals to their popular event format every month. This time, Basma Alsharif will be their guest.
